Iowa Appraisal New License Requirements
In the state of Iowa, there are three levels of real estate appraisal licensure:
- Associate Appraiser
- Certified Residential Appraiser
- Certified General Appraiser
The following minimum requirements must be met during the licensure process:
- Candidate must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED
- For the certified levels, candidate must pass the state exam
- Application must be fulfilled and submitted along with the required documentation and associated fees
Before you can become a certified appraiser, you must complete the requirements for the Associate Appraiser level. No work experience is required as an associate, but you must complete 75 hours of educational credits. Iowa Appraisal Upgrade License Requirements
After you’ve completed your associate appraiser requirements, you’ll need to meet the following higher education requirements if you want to advance to the certified levels:
- For Certified Residential level: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree OR 21 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required.
- For Certified General level: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree OR 30 college semester hours in specific subject matters
OnCourse Learning can help you jumpstart your educational requirements for the Certified General Level with the Upgrade to Licensed Level Package. Containing 4 of the 7 mandatory courses, this package covers 75 hours of the required 125 hours of educational credits. Similar to the Associate Appraiser package, the Update package offers in-depth material covering all the important knowledge and best practices of the appraisal industry. To achieve the certification, you’ll need to take 3 additional courses - Statistics, Modeling and Finance; Advanced Residential Application and Case Studies; and Appraisal Subject Matter Electives - plus complete 2500 hours of training within 30 months.
To move to the Certified General level, you will need 100 hours of education in addition to the required 200 for Certified Residential plus 3000 hours of experience completed within 30 months (including 1500 hours of non-residential appraisals).
Iowa Appraisal Continuing Education Requirements
Iowa real estate appraisal licenses should be renewed every two years by July 30th. To qualify for renewal, you must complete 28 hours of continuing education (including the 7-hour USPAP Update course which should be completed every other year).
